Morris Hills High School, a public high school located in the borough of Rockaway,
New Jersey houses a small brick building on a hilltop. It may seem unimportant on
first glance, but behind its unassuming exterior, students are hard at work in
engineering labs and drafting rooms. Read more to find out about the Morris Hills
engineering program!
Mr. Jeffrey Demiceli, also known as Mr. D has been the engineering teacher at Morris Hills
for the past 6 years. An oft-quoted meme at the back of his classroom reads –4 years of high
school-no engineering knowledge–, depicting at man squinting at two screwdrivers in sheer
confusion. Mr. Demiceli runs three classes: Fundamentals of CAD (computer-aided-design),
Fundamentals of Engineering, and Product Engineering
Courses
Product Engineering
Product Engineering encourages students to use their engineering knowledge to imagine, design,
and develop a prototype of their making in group of 5-6, over the course of a whole year.
The exhibition in May would feature an year’s hard work, and would involve the whole community
to understand how engineering can create a happier, more comfortable future.
Fundamentals of Engineering
Fundamentals of Engineering has students use the knowledge gained in Fundamentals of CAD,
in the Lego Project, where students attempt to prototype a Lego set of their creation in just
three months. Along with demonstrating vital components of the engineering design process,
Fundamentals of Engineering also teaches students how to operate high-end equipment like a
laser cutter and a 3-D printer.
Fundamentals of CAD
Fundamentals of CAD covers engineering design softwares AutoCad and SolidWorks, and introduces
students to the design and manufacturing of parts. It includes concepts like standard views,
isometric views, title blocks, threading and dying, and fits and tolerances.
